Anydesk

It sounds like the classic founding story of one of Silicon Valley’s big tech giants: three programmers left their tech company in 2012, set up their own business and set up their first company in a tiny office. Stuttgart instead of Palo Alto, a 25-square-meter office instead of a garage — otherwise the origin story of Anydesk is not so different from that of Google, Facebook and so on. Philipp Weiser, Olaf Liebe and Andreas Mähler combine their passion and belief in their software with Marc Zuckerberg, who also became CEO of the tech nerd.

In the early days, the three work day and night, paying themselves only 1000 euros gross. That’s just enough to survive. For two years, they develop their product: remote maintenance software. Tools of this kind are increasingly used during the Corona pandemic, when, for example, corporate IT departments have to switch to the laptops of their employees in the home office to fix technical problems.

Anydesk Company

Do you feel familiar? No wonder, actually there is already a German company since 2005, which is regarded as the worldwide market leader for remote desktop control: the Göppinger successful company Teamviewer. Managing Director Oliver Steil was germany’s highest-earning CEO in 2019 with a remuneration of 41 million euros.

The Anydesk founders Weiser, Liebe and Mähler are former employees of Teamviewer. They left the company in 2012 with the vision of creating their own, even better product, faster and cheaper. After completing his IT studies, the programmer Weiser started directly at the Göppinger company. After a few years at the company, he presented his proposals for the change, “but they didn’t exactly met with opposition,” according to the current Anydesk managing director Weiser.

So he built the first prototype on his weekends and in the evenings during the week, finally introducing the idea to business angel Andreas Burike. That same evening, he promised him a financing of 200,000 euros by sms. Today he says: “I was directly on fire and I believed from the beginning that this would become something.” Weiser announced and took love and mowers, which he had met with Teamviewer. In 2014, they launched the first version of their Remote Access Sotware Anydesk.

At that time, the market was already relatively heavily occupied by eight suppliers. “We knew we wouldn’t have a chance if we weren’t at least ten times better,” Weiser said. In particular, his team simplified registration and optimized the file size, allowing the application to be downloaded faster. According to the managing director, however, Anydesk differs in essence by a significantly faster transmission rate and lower prices. In this way, the company managed to be competitive with the competition.

For private customers, the software is free of charge

The business model of the two competitors is essentially the same: private customers can download the software free of charge, corporate customers pay a license fee. Teamviewer currently has 500,000 paying customers, Anydesk 37,000. Depending on the size of the company, a subscription at Anydesk costs 8.49 euros, 16.99 or 41.99 euros — with Teamviewer between 27.90 and 124.90 euros. According to Weiser, his company is thus up to 75 percent cheaper than other providers.

Anydesk can offer its service at a lower price because, allegedly unlike its competitors, it does not have to use a cloud service from other providers, but has its own. What the company saves in terms of costs can be passed on directly to customers in the price.

According to its own information, the Stuttgart-based company also has a unique selling point by enabling smooth working from a bandwidth of around 100 Kbps – i.e. even where the internet connection is not as strong.

As recently as January, the renowned US venture capitalist Insight Partners invested in Anydesk, probably around 11 million euros as the “Economic Week” writes. In total, the company is currently financed with 18 million euros, according to a press release from the beginning of the year. But Weiser and Co. didn’t need the money at all, he says. Because the company has achieved what many startups only achieve after many years: “We have been profitable since day one,” says Weiser. “The guys never thought about the money, they always thought about the product,” says business angel Burike.

In the meantime, Anydesk has been installed around 240 million timesT. The former three-man start-up now has 80 employees and users in every country in the world. Customers include the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics or Münster Airport, as well as companies from the Fortune 500 list.

Corona accelerates trend towards remote maintenance

Especially in the Corona crisis, home office tools are of course particularly in demand, which means that team viewers and Anydesk are currently experiencing a high-altitude flight. In the first quarter of 2020, Teamviewer’s invoiced revenues (billings) increased by 75 percent year-on-year to a record 119.7 million euros.

Anydesk, on the other hand, does not provide any information on revenue or turnover. Only so much: According to Fimen, growth during the pandemic was more than 200 percent compared to the previous year. In July, the Stuttgart-based competitor recorded 500,000 downloads a day. At least in the market of the core product, companies seem to be at least getting closer and closer, as an evaluation of the worldwide Google searches shows.

Unlike Anydesk, Teamviewer offers many other products other than remote maintenance. Just last week, the company announced that it was buying startup Ubimax for 136.5 million euros. The company is a leader in augmented reality for wearable devices such as smart eyewear in the industry (wearables). This means that TeamViewer will be able to connect not only machines but also workers in the future. The Göppinger company is thus even more focused on Industry 4.0. Philipp Weiser says: “But that’s why we’re not going to change our strategy, we don’t have to.” Anydesk, on the other hand, will continue to focus on the office context, for example, already planning its own video and meeting software, which works similarly to Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Teamviewers video conferencing app Blizz.

Time and again purchase offers

Teamviewer was bought by the investment company Permira in 2014 for 870 million euros. The investor’s entry accelerated growth enormously: Within two years, Teamviewer grew from 600 to almost 1,000 employees and In 2019, the biggest IPO by a tech company since the bursting of the dotcom bubble.

Anydesk company profile

Anydesk has no such plans yet. “At the moment we wouldn’t let ourselves be bought up,” weiser says. However, there would be interest from many sides, the founder “always receives various purchase offers”. Because the competitor from Stuttgart deliberately plays with the image of the small, personal Techie-Butze. Business Angel Andreas Burike says: “We were lucky in the beginning that Teamviewer was bought by Permira because many Germans were rather sceptical about private equity.” This gave Anydesk an advantage, as some customers switched to them.

No IPO planned so far

However, The IPO of Teamviewer was undeniably so successful that Anydesk should at least consider an IPO in the future. “That will show, certainly at some point,” Weiser says.

Initially, the company is working on expanding into the US market. Thanks to the lower prices, Anydesk hopes to have a competitive advantage there. “With superior transmission technology and a focus on Mobile First, AnyDesk is well prepared for further growth in the Us,” the company said. A separate headquarters is currently being established in Tampa Bay, Florida. In other countries, such as India, Anydesk is already more widespread than the Göppinger competitor.

In any case, Weiser still has big plans: “Our vision is to become the standard service and the most used solution for remote maintenance worldwide.” The next hurdle is to reach one billion users.
